Case Study - Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders)

Client Overview

Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders, is a French secular humanitarian-aid non-governmental organisation, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, best known for its projects in war-torn regions and developing countries facing endemic diseases. MSF provides independent, impartial assistance in more than 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters. MSF also reserves the right to speak out to bring attention to neglected crises, challenge inadequacies or abuse of the aid system, and to advocate for improved medical treatments and protocols.

What They Needed

Médecins Sans Frontières wanted a new website built on-top of a powerful content management system with a revised design, and new features. The site needed to take online donations using credit and debit cards, receive newsletter subscriptions, and all data collected through the site needed to be made available to backend systems. After the initial development, ongoing support and maintenance as well as consulting services were required as part of a long term partnership.

How SystemSeed Helped

SystemSeed started out by analysing MSF's old website and looking for areas where improvements could be made both in terms of visual design and information architecture. Leveraging as much of Drupal’s built-in functionality as possible, SystemSeed developed an environment that was optimised for turning new site visitors into long term donors. Drupal’s native flexibility and core features made it possible to build a powerful, feature-rich site with a minimum amount of custom code required. A well defined permissions system allows for a good level of segregation between the site's content editors, and those authorised to access donor's information.

The Benefits

Drupal's powerful content management functionality enables the team at Médecins Sans Frontières to take full control of their site and its content without requiring the time of developers. This is a huge step forwards from their old system, which only allowed content to be edited by developers with knowledge of HTML and the skills to use ftp servers to publish content. The new website conveys the professionalism and serious nature of MSF's work, and engages its audience with rich multimedia and interesting content.
