Announcement: Global IT outage 19th July 2024
Today's outage has impacted organisations around the world. SystemSeed clients are unaffected.
If you've seen the news today, you have already heard that many organisations around the world have been affected by an IT outage. This has impacted flights, TV channels, banks, and many more.
We are glad to say that no SystemSeed client platform has suffered any problems as a result, and we are monitoring the situation to ensure that remains true.
What happened?
IT systems around the world have been affected today by an update to Crowdstrike which has affected Windows hosts.
A Crowdstrike statement this morning says "Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This is not a security incident or cyberattack". Also that "The issue has been identified and a fix has been deployed".
SystemSeed CEO, Anthony Fox-Davies, adds "This issue looks like a failure of process somewhere in Crowdstrike's releases. This is why we recommend open code and open-source software for mission-critical applications. With open-source, security and testing are baked in - helped by the fact that open-source communities like Drupal have thousands of developers around the world watching for issues and helping to fix them as soon as they are spotted".
The full statement from Crowdstrike and updates from the BBC can be followed here.
Has this affected SystemSeed clients?
SystemSeed does not use Windows hosts, so the platforms that we have built and maintain for our clients are unaffected by the Crowsdstrike issue.
Where our platforms integrate with other software, such as payment processors, it's possible that some issues may occur on the side of the software we have integrated with.
To make sure that our clients have the best possible support, we are continuing to test their sites and any integrated features throughout the day, and will do so until the global issues are resolved.
This is why we recommend open code and open-source software for mission-critical applications. With open-source, security and testing are baked in.
What happens next?
- If you have not been affected so far, your systems should continue to operate normally. This should be the case for all SystemSeed clients and we are continuing to monitor our client's sites. Please get in touch with us if you have any concerns.
- If you have been affected, be aware that Crowdstrike are working to fix their problem, and state that their clients should check their website and support portal for the latest information.
